Fredrik Austbo – European Skateboard Champs 2010, Basel from PROCESS FILMS on Vimeo.

From the 5-8 of August 2010 it was the European Skateboard champs in Basel, Switzerland.
Fredrik Austbø has been attending ESC almost every year , with exception of a few because of knee surgeries, since he was 12 years old. That’s 10 years.
This year was ESC’s 10 year anniversary in Basel, Freddy has been attending since the first one. So he is no stranger to it.
Weather in Oslo was terrible, so I was excited to get away to Switzerland for the weekend in hope of sun and some good skating.
Freddy arrived in Basel on Thursday the 5th, I met up with him the next day on the 6th.
Basel is a super nice city, which I can recommend, it was pretty cool to see so many skaters around the streets, its not so like that in Oslo. It seemed like there was a lot of good street spots and the city had very nice concrete to skate.
Once Fred and I met up at the stadium, we were straight into it.
The ramp was uniquely set up, everything was birthday themed because of the 10th anniversary, on the mini they had a “gift box” on top of the deck which looked pretty interesting.
Also there was a pretty wild kink in the coping which was for sure going to add some flavor into peoples runs, if they dared to use it….
We spent Friday afternoon filming Freddy’s runs while he practiced for the semi’s on Saturday.
After skating we hit up the hotel, which turned out to be a super small room and one double bed, which we rightfully so called the honeymoon suite, named after its pink sheets, pink duvet and dual wine glasses, ever so lovingly placed on the table in the room….cute.
After some dinner (over spiced salmon) it was an early night for Freddy while I sat up logging footage.
Next day was banger weather, super hot and sun. Almost too hot for skating, but perfect for filming. We turned up early for Fred to dial in his runs again, we did a little filming, then we chilled out until the semis at 2pm, I got to do some skating too, so I was stoked.
Semis kicked in, Freddy was in the 4th or 5th heat of 3 skaters, each skater had 2 runs of 60secs to strut their stuff. Fred skated super good, only one fall in each run. He got every trick he set out for including some new stuff he innovated the day before.
Fred qualified 1st out of 70 odd skaters after Semis, which was super impressive for a guy who juggles a snowboard career and a skate career, being matched against a lot of guys who skate 24/7, so he was happy with the days success. Another night out for dinner. This time with a cousin of mine living in Basel, then it was back to the honey moon suite for stretching, logging and chilling to rest up for the final on Sunday.
Sunday’s weather was not looking as hot, on our way to the stadium we got slammed by what seemed to be a monsoon. If the event would be rained off, Freddy would win by default, that did not seem like such a bad thing, but he did prefer that he would get to skate.
After the monsoon weather it cleared right up and got stinking hot again, I guess it was close to the 30s, so everything was all go for the finals.
Once again we arrived early, Fred got his runs down then chilled for the remaining time before the finals.
The final was constructed differently. 4 Rounds, 8 min jam session consisting of 3 skaters, Jam means all 3 on the ramp at once, a little more hectic and intense, if you have ever skated for 8mins non stop on a decent sized ramp you will know this is hard work, especially if the pressure is on.
Fred was in the 1st round of the 4. He skated super well again, he put all his tricks down plus more that he came up with in the run. He was completely spent after the run so we decided to just peace out away from the stadium and chill until results were coming out, Fred had to change a flight also, so we needed to get away from noise, but all of that is explained in the edit, so watch tit to find out how things worked out. It turned out to be hectic.
I can say however that Fred did place second overall, which was a super good result, that he is stoked on.
Fred and I never made the prize giving, I just missed it and Fred was on a flight back to Norway to get ready to go to south America for a photo shoot with Quiksilver. right back into winter!
I collected his prize money, 1500 euros and his trophy and went back to the honeymoon suite alone…:(
I did some logging, editing and hit bed at around 12, only to get up 4 hours later for my trip back to Oslo.
What a weekend.
Congrats again to Fred for his 2nd place and check out these few photos and the edit from the trip!
Enjoy
