THE DEEP NORTH

I heard it had snowed 1m over new years up in the far North of Norway, so following the good ol wise words of “Why not” I decided to make a trip up there to see what we could find.
Myself, Sindre Iversen and Mats Hofgaard flew from Oslo on last Friday morning to Bodø. Bodø is located just North of the arctic circle, so its fair to say its pretty far north.
This time of year it remains pretty dark, so our primary purpose of the trip was to spot check and possibly do some night missions if we were lucky enough to find something, we were completely unsure of what to expect, none of us had been to the area before and we knew the town was small.

The flight was only 1 hr and 30mins from Oslo. When we arrived we had a nice rental car arranged, Mats was pretty stoked on the car, despite being confused by the steering wheel.
We drove 130 kms from Bodø to an area named Glomfjord. The town is small, with a population of only 1200. We were shocked at the amount of snow there, piles by the side of the road were heaped 2-3m+ high, at least.
The area was amazing, you definitely got an arctic feeling. The sun never really came up the entire time we were there, it sat just below the horizon from 930am-ish to 3pm then it was dark again.
We were met by a local named Øyvind, he took good care of us, he arranged a place for us to stay and various other things such as a generator and lights for filming at night. He was who recommended us to come up and check the area out.

The first night we drove around the area looking for spots to film, we were stoked to find several, which included massive wall rides, road side pillow lines, rails, gaps and bomb drops. The area is industrial, so there was a good mix of structures to get creative.

The next few days consisted mainly of spot checking and a wall ride night session, Sindre and Mats both got shots, with Sindre, as Mats would put it “raping” the wall with a fs 3 and 5.
We were surprised to see the northern lights during the session, it was only a brief display, but very cool none the less.
At one point Sindre and I had to refuel the generator, while we were gone, Mats was greeted by a moose. pretty wild.

We spent some time on the mountains during the days. The locals organized a snow cat to take us to a summit of one of the peaks to spot check. we found some pretty dope stuff. The wind was blowing like crazy, I can guess at least 100km an hr, but this didn’t stop us from taking in the amazing view or the area. I cannot recommend enough to others to check out northern Norway, its truly like nothing else I have ever seen.

We got some good riding while there. With all the fresh snow around there was plenty of pow to shred. Sindre, Mats and myself indulged in plenty of pow runs that left us feeling pretty happy!

We would like to thank the local people around Glomfjord, especially Øyvind and of course Stian and Erik at Glomfjord alpinsenter for all their kindness and helping us out while we were there. I am sure we will be back to hit the things we found.

Next week it looks like we are back north again, this time 300km further to Narvik to choose a spot for a heli kicker shoot, should be good!

Check out a few of the shots below from our trip, especially Mats’s mustache, he is super proud of it!
